  2. arts made in Russia and later in the USSR.
  3. From the 10th to the 17th century Russian art
  4. was dominated by the Eastern Orthodox Church
  5. and was influenced by various styles of
  6. Byzantine art. Painters such as Andrei Rublev
  7. produced icons, images of holy figures that
  8. were often considered precious. By the 17th
  9. century European influence had grown strong
  10. and in the 18th century the tsars imported
  11. European sculptors and painters. Early
  12. Russian Modernism 1910-30 anticipated Western
  13. trends but was then suppressed in favour of
  14. art geared to the sentimental glorification
  15. of workers.
